Our Dried Plums
According to legend, the Ente plum is a unique variety.
The fruit after drying became the world famous « Pruneaux d'Agen » was originally from Damascus. These trees were grafted to other varieties by French monks. Some evidence remains of its cultivation from the early fifteenth century. The dried plum (prune) was a favourite food for sailors in the seventeenth and eighteenth century, this was due to its durability and helped to fight of scurvy.
Plum trees were planted for the first time in the area by monks of the Abbey of Clairac during the 18th Century. Clairac is a little town in Lot-et-Garonne, not very far from Duras where we are situated. The plums were dried using a process inspired by Roman methods.
The dried plums were transported along the Garonne river on « Gabarres » (special flat bottomed boats) from Agen to the port of Bordeaux. This is why they are called dried plums from Agen.
Generation after generation of the Guinguet family have continued to be passionate about the production of dried plums and never cease to be involved in new ways of transforming them.
